Bequest of Julia B. Engel

This impressionist view of a flag-draped 57th Street on a winter day in 1918 is among the well-known series of New York City flag paintings Childe Hassam executed in response to the nationalistic displays of flags, banners, and bunting on the tall buildings that lined Fifth Avenue and nearby side streets following the entry of the United States into World War I. Painted from the vantage point of the artist’s studio, this view departs significantly from other paintings in the series with its winter setting, steep perspective, and depiction of the Sixth Avenue El in the background.
